After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Iowa-Iowa State wrestling rivalry is back in action on the mat. The rivalry has been dominated by Iowa for quite some time; Tom Brands is 15-0 against Iowa State as Iowa's head coach and the Hawkeyes have won 16 straight dual meets and 31 of 32 against the Cyclones. Most of those dual meets haven't been close (average margin of victory: 15 points for Iowa), though there was a nail-biter in Iowa City three years ago (a slender 19-18 Iowa victory).

This dual looks more interesting -- or at least more competitive -- than Iowa's first two dual meets of the season. In part that's because it's still unclear who will start for Iowa and if some of Iowa's top wrestlers will be in action or not; if Spencer Lee, Michael Kemerer, and Jacob Warner wrestle, Iowa would be heavily favored to not just win but score bonus points in those matches. If they don't wrestle, those weights are likely to become toss-up bouts.

Iowa should be strongly favored at four weights (133, 141, 165, and 285) and they should be good bets to earn bonus points at some of all of those weights as well. Iowa State should be a strong favorite at 157, a reasonable favorite at 149, and a slight favorite at 125 and 197 (if Lee and/or Warner are out). 174 and 184 look close to toss-ups (if Kemerer is out).

There's a path to victory for Iowa State in this dual, though Iowa's bonus point potential gives them a little more leeway. It would help if Kemerer or Warner are able to wrestle (Lee is not even listed on the match notes for the dual, so his presence seems very unlikely) today. Barring that, Iowa could use good results from the likes of Ybarra, Siebrecht, Glazier, or Nelson Brands.

We'll find out how it shakes out in a few hours. Feel free to post results and discussion in the comments below.
